We're in Fukuoka this week

It was hard to say goodbye to Joel and Kay yesterday morning after our few days with them in Seoul - especially with all the  excitement that lies ahead for them (and the rest of the family) in the coming weeks!

Joelly's parting gift was this pair of beautiful photos taken of us the previous evening at the Gwangjang Markets. It's so nice to have such a beautiful memento (so beautifully exposed and composed) of our visit to this amazing place. Thank you Joelly.

It was easy flying from Seoul to Fukuoka in Kyushu, Japan. It only takes a bit less than an hour and everything worked like clockwork.

Our gorgeous friend Haruko met us at Fukuoka airport - such a warm welcome; it seemed like only yesterday we'd spent time together (it was actually two years ago in Tokyo!). She'd arranged for a friend to drive us from the airport into our hotel so things could not have been easier for us.

Fukuoka is Japan's 4th largest city but with a population of 1.5million is nowhere near the size of the other big cities in Japan we've visited previously. The airport is so close to the city there can be no significant high rise or towers so that makes the city appear quite open and spacious. Here at the Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel in the middle of downtown, Fukuoka appears a very affluent, glossy and consumer oriented city.

We caught up with Haruko over a coffee at one of the very high-class coffee shops in the hotel precinct before heading out to find our evening meal. Haruko is a local so she took us off the downtown glossy streets, down a little alleyway to one of her favourite little eating haunts - because "they do fish very well".
This little restaurant was very busy - full of "suits" enjoying a delicious evening meal before heading home from work.
This was Rob's meal - raw mackerel in miso sauce!! Delicious he said. I am still not feeling 100% so I didn't try any of this delicious fare tonight.
