Back in Seoul

We've started our holiday here in Seoul - which is wonderful timing to see Joel and Kay-Soyoung just before baby arrives in 3 and 1/2 weeks (if all goes to plan). It's a BIG birthday for Kay next week too - so plenty of reasons to celebrate with us and a lovely group of friends over lunch today at the local Italian restaurant.

I've never been to a baby shower in Seoul before, but I loved the way this one had invited so many friendly blokes who were great conversationalists too. All the big news organisations (and some little ones too) were represented - so plenty to talk about, especially in this part of the world.

Before guests arrived we helped Kay get the baby shower decor set up .........
 including the cake ......

We freaked out a bit over how to deal with that fondant baby on top of the cake - but then it's toes and legs fell off so we could relax about it after that .....
Later this afternoon we took advantage of the good (but very cool) weather and booked a tour of the beautiful gardens of the nearby Changdeokgung Palace - in all their mid-Autumn splendour.
The palace and gardens date back to the thirteen hundreds and were especially beloved by the Joseon dynasty kings for the extensive "secret gardens" at the back of the palace complex.

I thought our tour guide was very picture worthy too - even amongst this beautiful royal landscape....

I have been struck by the beautiful Gingko trees in Seoul city this visit. They are all dropping their "fruit" this month and when you walk over them the Gingko nuts emit a horrible old cheese, sweaty socks aroma - so off putting from such a beautiful tree!
We have timed our visit so well for beautiful Autumn foliage ........

Credit for the pic below goes to Joel who helped me find the sun in this shot (it pays to be tall!) and then use the lens flare for great effect!

These beautiful gardens rival anything we've seen in Japan before - they are so extensive and other worldly - yet right in the centre of the the busy embassy and corporate district of Seoul.... and only a 10-15 minute walk from our favourite Somerset Palace Hotel.

It was a wonderful first day back in Seoul, and especially spending time with this gorgeous couple!
