To Glenelg (Adelaide)

We were four and a half hours on the road today, starting at Robe, then following the coastline to the ancient landscapes of Coorong Country and the mouth of the Murray, before heading through the beautiful Adelaide Hills to Adelaide's bay side suburb of Glenelg.

We started the day with a walk in the sunshine and breakfast at Robe's Union Cafe - before heading north along the Southern Ports Highway towards Adelaide.
Just over an hour out of Robe, and through Salt Creek we were at the southern tip of the protected lagoons of the Coorong National Park, in the traditional lands of the Ngarrindjeri people.

Almost halfway along the day's drive, we stopped for a break at Meningie on the SE side of Lake Albert. Meningie is just one of the towns in the Coorong that have been impacted by the imbalances (over allocation) in the Murray Darling River system, resulting in salinity, turbidity and low diversity, in what was once a pristine, rich and diverse freshwater lake.
We eventually got to Glenelg, around 2.30pm, after a relatively easy drive across the city on the A3.

After checking in we decided to take a long walk and find a lovely restaurant to enjoy a very late lunch early dinner - and celebrate achieving the first goal of this monumental road trip - completing the 1700 kilometres drive from Canberra to Adelaide along the Great Ocean Road!

Glenelg beach looked pretty in the afternoon light on the first day of Spring!

We found a wonderful place to enjoy a meal and a (few) glasses of Serafino Chardonnay from the nearby Mclaren Vale wine region. The Mediterranean Cafe Ristorante in Glenelg South was a fabulous find - serving the well-heeled locals well with excellent food, good local wines and staff that care about doing their job well.
It was heading towards the sunset hour by the time we left - but a beautiful time of the day to enjoy seeing some of the grand old mansions of this suburb .....

It was a rather brief light show this evening over the waters of the Gulf Saint Vincent - the cloud cover was just too dense.

And one last beautiful building photo - The old Glenelg Town Hall on Mosley Square.
